Effect of temperature on charging

The battery operates in high-temperature seasons, with main problem of overcharging. When the battery temperature increases, the activity of each active material increases, and once the positive oxygen evolution potential drops, the negative oxygen evolution potential also drops (negative value decreases). Therefore, the charging reaction speed is fast during charging, the charging current is large, and the charging voltage required during charging is low. In order to prevent excessive charging voltage, the battery temperature should be minimized to ensure good heat dissipation, prevent charging immediately after exposure to sun, and keep away from heat sources.

At low temperature, the activity of each active material of the battery decreases, and dissolving Pb on the electrode is difficult. Pb is difficult to replenish after consuming during charging. The charging current is greatly reduced. The positive electrode plate at -20°C accepts only 70% of the current under at normal temperature. Negative electrode is affected by the expansion agent and has lower low-temperature charging reception. The charging capacity at -20°C is only 40% of that at normal temperature. Therefore, charging under low temperature mainly has the problems of poor charging acceptance and insufficient charging, and requires to increase the charging voltage and extend the charging time. Improving low-temperature performance should start with the negative electrode. When using at low temperature, heat preservation and antifreeze measures should be taken, especially the battery is placed in a warm environment when charging, which is conducive to ensuring sufficient electricity, preventing the generation of irreversible sulfuric acid, and extending service life of battery.

During storage and use, the battery can be periodically activated and charged, which is the so-called balanced charging. It is very beneficial to preventing irreversible sulfation of the battery, and good for extending the battery life and is worth advocating.
